- IDEA 1 OF 8
Most change efforts fail
Kotter argues that many attempts to transform organisations fail because leaders skip important steps.
He offers an eight-stage process for leading change successfully. Rushing ahead without the early steps often leaves the effort weak and short-lived.
- IDEA 2 OF 8
Create urgency
The first step is establishing a sense of urgency, helping people see why change is needed now.
Complacency kills change. If people feel comfortable with how things are, they see no reason to put in the effort to change.
- IDEA 3 OF 8
Build a coalition
The second step is creating a guiding coalition, a group with enough power and trust to lead change.
No single person can do it alone. Such a team gives the effort the weight to be taken seriously.
- IDEA 4 OF 8
Develop a vision
The third step is developing a clear vision and strategy.
Vision gives direction. Without a clear picture of the future, people see change as a pile of confusing tasks. A good vision tells them where they are going and why it is worth the trouble.
- IDEA 5 OF 8
Communicate constantly
The fourth step is communicating the vision repeatedly through many channels.
Leaders must model it. One announcement is soon forgotten, so the message must be repeated until people understand it. When leaders act in line with the message, people believe it.
- IDEA 6 OF 8
Remove obstacles
The fifth step is empowering people to act by removing barriers.
Structures and systems may need to change. Even willing people give up if a rule, a boss or a process keeps blocking them. Clearing the way lets them put their energy into the change.
- IDEA 7 OF 8
Win early
The sixth step is generating short-term wins to build momentum and credibility.
Visible successes encourage support. Seeing real progress early convinces doubters that the effort is working. It also rewards the people who have worked hard so far.
- IDEA 8 OF 8
Make change stick
The final steps are consolidating gains and anchoring new approaches in culture.
Without this, old habits return. Declaring victory too early lets people slip back to the old way. Change lasts only when the new way becomes normal.
