Savitribai taught girls in Pune despite public abuse, and is remembered as one of India's first women teachers. Courage in the face of ridicule is part of reform.

She ran shelters for widows and pregnant women at risk, and cared for plague victims, dying of plague herself in 1897. Service meant personal risk, not distant charity.
