Kant: Duty and Dignity
- IDEA 1
Act on rules you could make universal
Kant's test for a choice is whether you could want everyone in your position to act the same way. If a rule fails when everyone follows it, such as lying when convenient, it is wrong.
- IDEA 2
People are ends, never mere means
Treat every person as valuable in themselves, not only as a tool for your goals. This idea underpins human dignity and informed consent.
- IDEA 3
Good will and duty
For Kant, an act is morally worthy when done because it is right, not for reward or fear. A civil servant who stays honest when no one is watching shows this kind of will.
