Mindfulness in Plain English

  1. IDEA 1

    Meditation explained in plain words

Gunaratana, a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, explains vipassana, or insight meditation, in simple everyday language. He aims to strip away mystery and show what the practice actually involves in the Theravada tradition.

  2. IDEA 2

    The breath anchors attention

Gunaratana describes using the breath as the main object of attention in this practice. When the mind wanders, as it always does, the meditator gently notices this and returns to the breath without scolding themselves.

  3. IDEA 3

    Mindfulness differs from concentration

Gunaratana distinguishes concentration, holding attention on one thing, from mindfulness, noticing whatever arises without judging it. In his view the two work as partners, and insight grows when they are balanced.
