  1. IDEA 1 OF 8

Reality can be sorted into categories

The Vaisheshika Sutras, attributed to the sage Kanada, analyse everything that exists into a small number of categories, called padarthas.

Understanding these categories correctly, the text holds, is part of the path to liberation.

  2. IDEA 2 OF 8

    Substance, quality and action

The first three categories are substance, the things that exist; quality, their properties like colour; and action, their movements.

Together they describe the physical world. Every object can be described this way.

  3. IDEA 3 OF 8

    Universals, particulars and inherence

Other categories include universals, shared features like cowness; particularity, what makes each atom unique; and inherence, the relation joining qualities to substances.

Later thinkers added non-existence. These ideas explain how things are related.

  4. IDEA 4 OF 8

Nine substances make up the world

Vaisheshika lists nine substances: earth, water, fire, air, ether, time, space, self and mind.

All things are made from or exist within these. Self and mind are counted as real substances.

  5. IDEA 5 OF 8

    Matter is made of atoms

Vaisheshika teaches that physical things are made of tiny, indivisible atoms called paramanu.

Atoms combine to form larger objects, an early atomic theory. Atoms themselves are eternal and indestructible. It is ancient.

  6. IDEA 6 OF 8

    Dharma brings prosperity and freedom

The text defines dharma as what leads to worldly well-being and ultimate good.

Ethical action supports both. Good conduct leads both to a good life here and to final freedom.

  7. IDEA 7 OF 8

    Analysis aids understanding

Vaisheshika uses careful analysis to understand the world's structure.

This approach influenced later Indian logic and science. Its careful sorting of reality shaped later scientific and logical thinking. Its influence lasted.

  8. IDEA 8 OF 8

    Knowledge leads to liberation

Like Nyaya, with which it later merged, Vaisheshika holds that correct knowledge of reality frees the self from suffering.

Seeing the world clearly loosens the bonds that cause suffering. Clarity frees.
