  1. IDEA 1 OF 8

    An epic told for everyone

    C. Rajagopalachari retold the Ramayana in simple English, closely following Valmiki's story. He wanted readers of all ages to understand the epic and the ideals of duty, loyalty and courage that it presents.

  2. IDEA 2 OF 8

    A promise leads to exile

King Dasharatha had once promised his queen Kaikeyi two wishes.

When she asks for her son Bharata to be crowned and for Rama to be sent into exile for fourteen years, the king is bound by his word, and the kingdom is plunged into grief.

  3. IDEA 3 OF 8

    Rama accepts exile calmly

Rama accepts his father's decision without anger, putting duty and his father's honour above his own claim to the throne.

Sita and his brother Lakshmana insist on going with him, showing their loyalty and love.

  4. IDEA 4 OF 8

    Bharata refuses the throne

When Bharata learns what has happened, he rejects the crown and goes to the forest to bring Rama back.

Rama refuses to break his father's promise, so Bharata rules on his behalf, placing Rama's sandals on the throne.

  5. IDEA 5 OF 8

    Ravana carries Sita away

In the forest, the demon king Ravana tricks Rama and Lakshmana and carries Sita away to his island kingdom of Lanka.

Rama's search for Sita becomes the heart of the story.

  6. IDEA 6 OF 8

    Hanuman finds Sita

Rama gains the friendship of the monkey king Sugriva and his devoted follower Hanuman.

Hanuman leaps across the sea to Lanka, finds Sita and reassures her that Rama is coming.

  7. IDEA 7 OF 8

    Good triumphs in the war

Rama's army builds a bridge to Lanka and fights a great war against Ravana's forces.

Rama finally defeats Ravana, showing the victory of righteousness over pride and wrongdoing. Even Ravana's courage is acknowledged.

  8. IDEA 8 OF 8

    Return brings joy and questions

Rama returns to Ayodhya and is crowned king.

Rajaji also describes the later trials Sita faces, which raise hard questions about justice and duty that readers still debate. Rajaji leaves room for readers' own judgment.
