- IDEA 1 OF 8
Right knowledge leads to freedom
The Nyaya Sutras, attributed to Gautama, teach that suffering comes from false knowledge and that correct understanding can bring liberation.
To reach that understanding, the text sets out a careful system of logic, evidence and debate.
- IDEA 2 OF 8
Sixteen topics structure the study
The text lists sixteen categories to be mastered, including the means of knowledge, objects of knowledge, doubt, purpose, example, debate and fallacies.
Together they form a complete method for reasoning well.
- IDEA 3 OF 8
Knowledge has four sources
Nyaya accepts four pramanas, or valid means of knowledge: perception, inference, comparison and reliable testimony.
Each must be used correctly to reach true conclusions. Errors come from misusing them. Each has rules.
- IDEA 4 OF 8
Perception is direct knowledge
Perception arises from contact between the senses and their objects.
Nyaya explains how perception can be correct or mistaken. It also explains how illusions arise and can be corrected by careful checking.
- IDEA 5 OF 8
Inference follows clear steps
Nyaya presents a five-step form of inference: stating the claim, giving the reason, offering an example, applying it and concluding.
A classic example infers fire on a hill from seeing smoke.
- IDEA 6 OF 8
Debate has different forms
The text distinguishes honest discussion seeking truth from debate aimed at winning and from destructive criticism without a position of one's own.
It values discussion that seeks truth. Truth is the aim.
- IDEA 7 OF 8
Fallacies must be avoided
Nyaya lists faulty reasons and tricks in argument, teaching how to spot and avoid them.
Clear thinking protects against error. Knowing these tricks helps debaters argue honestly and fairly. Honesty wins.
- IDEA 8 OF 8
Logic serves spiritual goals
For Nyaya, logic is not just intellectual; correct knowledge of the self and world leads to liberation from suffering.
Thinking clearly is itself a step on the spiritual path. Logic liberates.
