  1. IDEA 1 OF 8

    Drama was created for everyone

The Natyashastra, attributed to the sage Bharata, tells how the god Brahma created drama as a fifth Veda that all people could enjoy.

Unlike the older Vedas, theatre was meant to be open to everyone, teaching through entertainment.

  2. IDEA 2 OF 8

    The first play caused trouble

According to the text, the first performance showed the gods defeating demons, which angered the demons who disrupted it.

A special theatre was then built to protect performances, explaining the origin of the stage.

  3. IDEA 3 OF 8

Rasa is the heart of art

The text's most famous idea is rasa, the emotional flavour that an audience experiences.

A good performance does not just show emotions on stage but lets viewers taste them deeply.

  4. IDEA 4 OF 8

    Eight rasas guide performance

Bharata describes eight rasas, including love, humour, compassion, anger, heroism, fear, disgust and wonder.

Later thinkers added a ninth, peace. Each rasa arises from particular emotions and situations. Performers learn to evoke each one.

  5. IDEA 5 OF 8

    Emotions create the rasa

The text explains how bhavas, or emotional states, combine with causes and expressions to produce rasa.

Actors must understand these emotions to move the audience. Feeling must be understood before it can be shown.

  6. IDEA 6 OF 8

    Acting has four parts

Bharata describes four kinds of abhinaya, or acting: body movement, speech, costume and make-up, and inner emotional expression.

A skilled performer combines all four. Gestures and expressions were described in great detail.

  7. IDEA 7 OF 8

    Theatre buildings follow rules

The text gives detailed instructions on building theatres, including size and shape.

These rules aimed to help audiences see and hear performances clearly. Even the placement of pillars was considered with care.

  8. IDEA 8 OF 8

    Music and dance belong together

The Natyashastra also covers music, rhythm and dance, treating them as essential parts of drama.

It has deeply influenced Indian classical dance and music. Its influence on Indian arts is enormous.
