1. IDEA 1 OF 6

   Many paths, one reality

   Ramakrishna followed several spiritual paths in his own life and concluded they lead to the same reality, as many steps lead down to the same lake.

   Each person may take the path that suits them.

2. IDEA 2 OF 6

   Work like a caretaker

   A caretaker looks after a household and its children with love, yet knows her true home is elsewhere.

   Do your duties fully in the world, while holding them lightly.

3. IDEA 3 OF 6

   Live in the mud, stay clean

   Like a fish that lives in mud yet stays shiny, a person can live fully in the world without being stained by greed and pride.

4. IDEA 4 OF 6

   Longing is the key

   What matters most is sincere longing, as intense as a drowning person's need for air.

   Without longing, rituals and learning stay on the surface.

5. IDEA 5 OF 6

   Serve people as the divine

   Ramakrishna taught that we should serve living beings not out of pity but as if serving the divine itself.

   This idea later inspired Vivekananda's work of service.

6. IDEA 6 OF 6

   The ego is a passing cloud

   The sense of a separate, proud 'I' is like a cloud that hides the sun.

   When it thins, the light that was always there shines through.
