The Power of Full Engagement

  1. IDEA 1

    Energy, not time, matters most

Loehr and Schwartz argue that performance depends on managing energy rather than time. Hours are fixed, but the quality of energy you bring to them can grow or shrink, so they focus on building and renewing energy.

  2. IDEA 2

    Energy comes from four sources

The authors describe four dimensions of energy: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Each must be looked after, and weakness in one, such as poor sleep or a lack of meaning, drags down the others.

  3. IDEA 3

    Alternate effort with recovery

Like athletes, people perform best when they oscillate between intense effort and real recovery. The authors warn that constant pressure without breaks leads to burnout, while too little challenge leads to weakness.
