First Things First

  1. IDEA 1

Follow a compass, not a clock

The authors contrast the clock, which represents schedules and appointments, with the compass, which represents values, direction and conscience. Real effectiveness, they argue, comes from making sure the clock serves the compass, not the other way round.

  2. IDEA 2

Sort tasks by urgency and importance

The Time Management Matrix divides activities into four quadrants by whether they are urgent and whether they are important. The authors argue that many people live in the urgent quadrants, reacting to pressure, while important long-term work gets neglected.

  3. IDEA 3

    Urgency can become an addiction

The authors describe urgency addiction: the rush of dealing with crises and interruptions can feel rewarding and make people feel needed. Over time, they warn, this habit crowds out the important but quieter activities that actually improve life.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

  1. IDEA 1

Change your lens before your behaviour

Covey argues that how we see a situation, our paradigm, shapes everything we do. He tells of a man on a train whose noisy children annoyed him, until he learned the family had just lost their mother. Lasting change, he says, works inside-out, starting with character.

  2. IDEA 2

    Grow from dependence to interdependence

Covey describes a maturity continuum. We start dependent on others, become independent through private victories over ourselves, and then reach interdependence, working well with others. The first three habits build independence, and the next three build strong relationships on top of it.

  3. IDEA 3

    Proactive people choose their response

The first habit is to be proactive: between what happens to us and how we react, there is room to choose. Covey contrasts the Circle of Concern, everything we worry about, with the Circle of Influence, what we can affect. Focusing on the second makes it grow.
