My Years with Apu

  1. IDEA 1

A novel inspired a first film

Ray describes how he fell in love with Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's novel Pather Panchali while illustrating an edition of it. He decided to turn it into a film, even though he had never directed before and was working in advertising.

  2. IDEA 2

    Money was the constant problem

Ray recounts the difficulty of finding funds for a film with no stars and no songs. He pawned possessions and filmed in short bursts when money allowed, until the West Bengal government finally stepped in to help finish the project.

  3. IDEA 3

    Beginners made the film

Ray's crew was mostly inexperienced, including cameraman Subrata Mitra, who had never shot a film. Ray explains how their freshness and willingness to experiment helped create a natural, realistic look.

Our Films, Their Films

  1. IDEA 1

Indian films lacked a true style

In an early essay, Ray argues that Indian cinema copied Hollywood instead of drawing on Indian life. He wanted films that showed real people, places and rhythms, told simply and honestly.

  2. IDEA 2

    Cinema has its own language

Ray argues that film is not filmed theatre or literature. It speaks through images, sound, movement and editing, and a director must think visually rather than relying on dialogue to tell the story.

  3. IDEA 3

    Renoir's visit inspired him

Ray describes meeting the French director Jean Renoir, who came to Bengal to shoot a film. Renoir's interest in the Indian countryside and his encouragement strengthened Ray's wish to make films about real Bengal.
