The Clash of Civilizations
- IDEA 1
Culture will drive future conflict
Huntington argues that after the Cold War, the main sources of conflict would be cultural rather than ideological or economic. People would increasingly identify with civilisations, such as Western, Islamic, Sinic and Hindu.
- IDEA 2
The world has several civilisations
Huntington describes major civilisations defined by religion, history and culture. He argues these civilisations would shape alliances and conflicts. Religion is the most important element binding each civilisation together. Borders follow cultures.
- IDEA 3
The West faces challenges
Huntington argues that Western power is declining relative to others. He warns that the West should not assume its values are universal. Respecting others' cultures is wiser than imposing Western ways.
