The Masnavi
- IDEA 1
The reed's longing
Rumi opens with a reed flute that cries because it was cut from its reed bed. Its song is the longing of every soul to return to its source, and that longing is itself a sign of the connection.
- IDEA 2
The guest house
Treat every feeling, even sorrow or anger, like a visitor arriving at your house. Welcome it, learn what it came to teach, and let it leave. Resisting feelings makes them stay longer.
- IDEA 3
The wound lets the light in
Rumi sees pain as an opening rather than only damage. The places where we have been broken are often where understanding and compassion first enter.
