The Emperor's New Mind
- IDEA 1
Minds may not be computers
Penrose challenges the idea that the human mind is simply a computer running a program. He argues that some aspects of human understanding cannot be captured by any computation. Penrose says this is more than a matter of speed.
- IDEA 2
Turing machines define computation
Penrose explains Alan Turing's model of computation, a simple machine that follows rules step by step. Every computer program, in principle, can be run on such a machine. Turing's simple model helped define what computing can and cannot do.
- IDEA 3
Gödel shows limits of rules
Penrose argues that Gödel's incompleteness theorem shows humans can see truths that no fixed set of rules can prove. He takes this as evidence that thinking is not purely mechanical.
