Braiding Sweetgrass

  1. IDEA 1

    Science and Indigenous knowledge meet

Kimmerer, a botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, weaves together scientific knowledge and Indigenous teachings about plants. She argues that both offer ways of understanding and caring for the land.

  2. IDEA 2

    The land offers gifts

Kimmerer describes the natural world as giving gifts, such as berries and sweetgrass. Receiving gifts creates a relationship of gratitude. In her view, seeing the world as a source of gifts, not goods to be bought, changes how a person feels about it.

  3. IDEA 3

    Gifts call for reciprocity

Kimmerer argues that people should give back to the land in return for what it provides. In her account, a gift received without any return can feel like taking, so a healthy relationship needs gratitude and care to flow in both directions.
