The Rise of the Creative Class

  1. IDEA 1

    Creativity drives the economy

Florida argues that creativity has become the main driver of economic growth. He identifies a growing creative class of people whose work involves creating new ideas, technology or content. Cities and firms compete for such people.

  2. IDEA 2

    A new class has emerged

Florida describes the creative class as scientists, engineers, artists, designers, writers and professionals who use knowledge creatively. He argues they make up a large share of the workforce. In his view, their numbers have grown quickly over recent decades.

  3. IDEA 3

    Three Ts attract growth

Florida argues that successful cities combine technology, talent and tolerance. Places with all three attract creative people and businesses. In his view, a city that has only one or two of these is less likely to thrive in the new economy.
