Letters to a Young Poet
- IDEA 1
A poet answers a young writer
Rilke wrote these letters to Franz Kappus, a young man who had sent him poems and asked for advice. Instead of judging the poems, Rilke encouraged Kappus to look inward and discover whether he truly needed to write.
- IDEA 2
Look inside for answers
Rilke advised Kappus not to seek approval from others. He should ask himself whether he must write, and if the answer is yes, build his life around it. Rilke wanted him to find his own reasons rather than depend on the opinions of others.
- IDEA 3
Solitude is valuable
Rilke encouraged Kappus to embrace solitude rather than fear it. Being alone allows a person to grow and understand themselves. Rilke suggested that time alone is not a punishment but a space where we become ourselves.
