The Lucifer Effect

  1. IDEA 1

Ordinary people can do terrible things

Zimbardo asks how good people come to act cruelly. He argues that powerful situations and systems, not just personal character, can lead ordinary people to harm others. He spent much of his career studying this question.

  2. IDEA 2

    A prison study spiralled

Zimbardo describes the Stanford Prison Experiment, in which students played guards and prisoners. Some guards became abusive, and the study was stopped early. Later critics have questioned its methods and conclusions.

  3. IDEA 3

    Situations shape behaviour powerfully

Zimbardo contrasts dispositional explanations, which blame individual character, with situational ones, which look at the setting. He argues people often underestimate how much situations drive behaviour. This shapes how we judge and prevent wrongdoing.
