The Master Algorithm
- IDEA 1
One algorithm might learn everything
Domingos imagines a master algorithm, a single learning method that could discover any knowledge from data. He believes finding it would be one of the greatest achievements in science. Such a method would not need task-specific programming.
- IDEA 2
Machine learning has five tribes
Domingos describes five schools of machine learning, each with its own approach. He argues that each has strengths and none alone is enough. A true master method, he suggests, would combine ideas from all of them.
- IDEA 3
Symbolists use logic
Domingos describes symbolists, who learn by working out general rules from examples, like a logician. Their method is called inverse deduction. This works well when knowledge can be stated clearly, but it struggles with messy, noisy data.
