8 key ideas, each explained in our own words.

Everybody Loves a Good Drought

  1. IDEA 1

    Stories from the poorest districts

Sainath travelled through some of India's poorest districts, reporting on how ordinary people lived. He wanted to show poverty through real lives rather than statistics alone. Each report focuses on a particular village or family.

  2. IDEA 2

    Drought can be profitable

Sainath describes how drought relief money often benefits contractors, officials and the powerful more than the people suffering. This is why, he suggests ironically, some people welcome droughts. The real victims often see very little of the money.

  3. IDEA 3

    Schemes often miss the poor

Sainath describes development schemes that were badly designed for local conditions. Poor families sometimes ended up worse off, burdened with loans or assets they could not use. Planners far away rarely understood local realities.
