The Now Habit

  1. IDEA 1

    Procrastination protects us from fear

Fiore argues that procrastination is a way of coping with fear: fear of failure, of judgment or even of success. Delay gives temporary relief, but it keeps the fear alive and makes the task feel even more threatening.

  2. IDEA 2

Choose rather than say you must

Fiore suggests replacing phrases like I have to with I choose to. Feeling forced to do something creates resistance, while seeing it as your own choice gives a sense of control and reduces the urge to rebel by delaying.

  3. IDEA 3

    Plan guilt-free play first

A central idea is guilt-free play: scheduling leisure, rest and time with friends before work. Fiore argues that knowing you will have fun makes it easier to focus, while constant guilt drains the energy you need for work.
