The Signal and the Noise
- IDEA 1
Most predictions fail
Silver, a statistician known for election forecasting, argues that many predictions fail because people confuse noise, random information, with signal, the true pattern. More data does not automatically mean better predictions.
- IDEA 2
Ratings failed in 2008
Silver describes how credit rating agencies misjudged risks before the 2008 financial crisis. Their models ignored important uncertainties. They gave the safest rating to products that turned out to be risky, partly because they treated their forecasts as more certain than they were.
- IDEA 3
Weather forecasts improved
Silver describes how weather forecasting has become much more accurate through better models and computing. It is a success story of prediction. Better forecasts give people more time to prepare for storms, which shows what good prediction can achieve.
