Why We Sleep
- IDEA 1
Two systems control when we sleep
Walker explains that sleep is governed by a circadian rhythm, the body's internal clock, and sleep pressure, a build-up of a chemical called adenosine while we are awake. Together they decide when we feel alert or sleepy.
- IDEA 2
Caffeine masks sleep pressure
Caffeine works by blocking the brain's adenosine signal, Walker explains, so we feel less sleepy without actually being rested. Because caffeine lasts for hours, an afternoon coffee may still affect sleep that night.
- IDEA 3
Sleep comes in two main types
Walker describes NREM sleep, especially deep sleep, and REM sleep, when most vivid dreams happen. The night cycles between them, with deep sleep more common early and REM sleep later.
