The Rational Optimist

  1. IDEA 1

    Life keeps getting better

Ridley argues that for most people, life has improved enormously over the centuries in health, wealth and comfort. He believes this progress is likely to continue. He bases this view on long-term trends rather than on single years.

  2. IDEA 2

    Trade made humans prosperous

Ridley argues that exchange, swapping goods and services, is the key to human progress. When people trade, each can specialise in what they do best, raising everyone's living standards. Groups cut off from trade, he says, tend to fall behind.

  3. IDEA 3

    Ideas meet and multiply

Ridley uses the phrase ideas having sex to describe how innovations combine to create new ones. Trade and contact between people allow ideas to meet and mix. In his view, more meeting and mixing means faster progress.

The Red Queen

  1. IDEA 1

    Species must keep running

Ridley uses the Red Queen hypothesis, named after a character in Through the Looking-Glass, to argue that species must keep evolving just to stay in place. Rivals and parasites evolve too, so standing still means falling behind.

  2. IDEA 2

    Sex is a puzzle

Ridley asks why sex exists, since reproducing without a partner would seem more efficient. He reviews theories that explain why mixing genes from two parents might be worth the cost.

  3. IDEA 3

    Parasites drive sex

Ridley favours the idea that sex helps living things stay ahead of fast-evolving parasites and germs. Mixing genes each generation makes offspring harder targets. In his account, the race between hosts and germs never ends, so staying the same is risky.
