The One-Straw Revolution

  1. IDEA 1

    Farming can work with nature

Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer and former plant scientist, describes his method of natural farming. He argues that farmers can grow good crops by doing less and letting nature do more of the work.

  2. IDEA 2

    Doing less can achieve more

Fukuoka describes do-nothing farming, which avoids unnecessary tasks. He asks what he can stop doing rather than what more he can do. In his view, many farm tasks add effort without adding value, so he looks for what can be left out.

  3. IDEA 3

    He did not plough

Fukuoka describes growing crops without ploughing the soil, which he believed harmed it. In his account, the soil already loosens itself through roots, worms and small animals, so turning it over was an unnecessary step.
