The Effective Manager
- IDEA 1
Management is a set of behaviours
Horstman, co-founder of Manager Tools, argues that effective management is not about personality but about doing a few things consistently. Managers are responsible for results and for keeping good people.
- IDEA 2
Know your people
Horstman argues that managers must know their team members well. Relationships make other tools work. Knowing what each person cares about, and how they like to work, helps you guide them well. Without that, even good advice can feel cold and fall flat.
- IDEA 3
Hold regular one-on-ones
Horstman recommends weekly one-on-one meetings with each direct report. These meetings build trust and communication. Having a fixed time each week gives every person a safe place to raise problems early. It also shows them that you value their work and their time.
