The Absorbent Mind

  1. IDEA 1

    Young children absorb their world

Montessori argues that children from birth to about six have an absorbent mind. They take in language, culture and habits from their surroundings effortlessly, almost like a sponge. She sees this early period as the foundation of the whole personality.

  2. IDEA 2

    Sensitive periods guide learning

Montessori describes sensitive periods, times when children are especially ready to learn particular skills, such as language or order. In her account, when the right moment is used well, skills come with little effort, and when it passes, learning later takes more work.

  3. IDEA 3

    Learning starts unconsciously

Montessori argues that very young children learn unconsciously, then gradually become conscious learners. In her account, the child takes in impressions without knowing it, and these slowly become part of the mind. Later learning becomes more deliberate.

The Montessori Method

  1. IDEA 1

    Children teach themselves

Montessori, an Italian physician, describes her method of education based on observing children in her first school, the Casa dei Bambini in Rome. She argues that children learn naturally when given the right environment and freedom.

  2. IDEA 2

    Education should be scientific

Montessori argues for scientific pedagogy, basing teaching on careful observation of children rather than tradition. In her account, she looked closely at how children actually behaved and let those observations shape the classroom.

  3. IDEA 3

    Classrooms should be prepared

Montessori describes a prepared environment, arranged with child-sized furniture and materials children can use independently. In her view, a child can act without constant help when the room fits their size. Such a setting supports independence and confidence.
