India's Founding Moment
- IDEA 1
India chose democracy without preconditions
Khosla argues that India's founders adopted universal adult suffrage in a society that was poor, mostly illiterate and divided by caste and religion. Many thinkers believed democracy needed modern social conditions first, but the founders rejected that view.
- IDEA 2
The Constitution was meant to teach
Khosla describes the Constitution as a kind of pedagogy: a tool to create democratic citizens. Rather than waiting for people to become modern, the founders hoped that democratic institutions themselves would shape new habits and values.
- IDEA 3
Detailed law guided public life
The first strategy Khosla identifies is codification. The Constitution was long and detailed so that power would be exercised through clear rules, not through custom or personal authority. Written rules would teach a new public culture.
