The Road Less Travelled

  1. IDEA 1

    Accepting difficulty makes life easier

Peck begins by stating that life is hard, and argues that once we truly accept this, it becomes easier to bear. Many people suffer more because they expect life to be easy and resent its problems.

  2. IDEA 2

    Discipline solves problems

Peck argues that discipline is the basic set of tools for solving life's problems. He describes four parts of discipline: delaying gratification, accepting responsibility, dedication to truth and balancing. Peck presents these four tools as skills that anyone can practise.

  3. IDEA 3

    Delay pleasure to do better

Peck explains that delaying gratification means facing the pain of a problem first so that later experience is better. Doing hard tasks before pleasant ones leads to a fuller life.
