Extreme Ownership

  1. IDEA 1

Leaders own everything in their world

Willink and Babin's core principle is extreme ownership: a leader takes full responsibility for results, including mistakes by their team. Instead of blaming others, they ask what they could have done better.

  2. IDEA 2

    There are no bad teams

The authors describe a training race where a losing boat crew started winning after a leadership swap. They conclude that leadership is the biggest factor in performance, and that a team rises or falls with its leader.

  3. IDEA 3

    Believe in the mission first

A leader must understand and believe in why a mission matters before asking others to carry it out. If a leader doubts an order, the authors advise asking questions up the chain until the purpose is clear.
