Radical Candor
- IDEA 1
Good bosses care and challenge
Scott, a former manager at Google and Apple, argues that great bosses combine two things: caring personally about the people they manage and challenging them directly with honest feedback. She calls this combination radical candour.
- IDEA 2
Niceness can be harmful
Scott describes ruinous empathy, caring but failing to challenge. Avoiding hard feedback leaves people unaware of problems. In Scott's view, being too kind to say what is wrong may feel pleasant now, but it costs the person later.
- IDEA 3
Harshness damages trust
Obnoxious aggression is challenging without caring. It may deliver truth but hurts relationships. In Scott's view, a person who feels attacked stops listening, so even correct criticism does not lead to improvement.
