Nitisara
- IDEA 1
A verse guide to statecraft
Kamandaka's Nitisara is a work on the art of government, written in verse. It draws heavily on the teachings associated with Kautilya, presenting them in a shorter form meant to be remembered and studied by rulers and advisers.
- IDEA 2
A ruler must first rule himself
The text begins with the king's self-discipline. A ruler who cannot control anger, greed and pleasure will soon lose control of his kingdom, so mastering the senses is treated as the foundation of good government.
- IDEA 3
The state has seven limbs
Kamandaka describes the state as having seven limbs: the king, ministers, territory, fortified towns, treasury, army and allies. Each part supports the others, and weakness in one can endanger the whole kingdom.
