Jyotirao Phule: Truth-Seeking and Equality

IDEA 1
Education as liberation
Phule opened schools for girls and for children of oppressed castes in the 1840s and 1850s. He saw education as the key that unlocks every other kind of freedom.
IDEA 2
Satyashodhak Samaj
He founded the Society of Truth Seekers to challenge caste hierarchy and priestly control. Reform, in his view, needed organised social action, not only individual goodwill.
IDEA 3
Farmers' dignity
Phule wrote about the exploitation of cultivators by moneylenders and officials. His concern for the farmer's burden remains relevant in debates on rural distress.
