The Scout Mindset
- IDEA 1
Two mindsets shape thinking
Galef describes two ways of thinking. In soldier mindset, we defend our beliefs like soldiers protecting territory. In scout mindset, we try to see things as they really are, like scouts mapping the land.
- IDEA 2
Soldier mindset feels good
Galef explains that soldier mindset protects our self-image and comfort. It helps us feel good, but leads to poor decisions. Like a soldier defending a position, we hold on to our beliefs and defend them, even when we may be wrong.
- IDEA 3
Motivated reasoning distorts
Galef describes motivated reasoning, believing what we want to be true. It is common and often unconscious. For example, we look hard for flaws in facts we dislike but accept facts we like without checking them.
