Don't Believe Everything You Think

  1. IDEA 1

    Thoughts are not the problem

Nguyen distinguishes thoughts, which arise naturally, from thinking, which is our habit of judging and dwelling on them. He argues that suffering comes mainly from thinking about our thoughts. This distinction is central.

  2. IDEA 2

    Suffering starts with judgement

Nguyen explains that when we attach meaning and judgement to a thought, we create emotional pain. Letting thoughts pass without analysis reduces distress. Pain grows with every replay. Letting go eases it.

  3. IDEA 3

    Peace is our natural state

Nguyen argues that people have innate wellbeing, a natural sense of peace beneath their worries. Thinking covers it up, but it is always present. Quieting the mind uncovers it. It never left.
