How Not to Be Wrong

  1. IDEA 1

    Maths extends common sense

Ellenberg argues that mathematics is not just abstract formulas but a way of thinking more clearly. It helps us avoid errors that common sense alone might miss. His examples show maths as a tool used in daily life.

  2. IDEA 2

    Not everything is linear

Ellenberg warns against assuming that relationships are straight lines. For example, a little of something may be good, but more may not be better. This means a rule that works in one range may fail when pushed too far.

  3. IDEA 3

    Missing data can mislead

Ellenberg tells the story of Abraham Wald, who studied bullet holes in returning planes. Wald realised that armour should go where returning planes had no holes, because planes hit there did not return.
