The Man-Eaters of Kumaon

  1. IDEA 1

    A hunter tracked man-eating tigers

Corbett, a British-born hunter who grew up in India, describes his pursuit of tigers and leopards that had killed many people in the Kumaon hills in the early twentieth century. Villagers asked him for help.

  2. IDEA 2

    One tiger killed hundreds

Corbett describes the Champawat tiger, said to have killed over four hundred people in Nepal and India before he shot it. In his account, the hunt took great patience, since the animal moved widely and was cautious.

  3. IDEA 3

    Injury made tigers dangerous

Corbett argues that tigers usually became man-eaters because injuries or old age stopped them hunting normal prey. In his account, a hurt or ageing animal could no longer catch its usual prey, and turned to the easiest food it could find, which was people.
