The End of Poverty

  1. IDEA 1

    Extreme poverty can be ended

Sachs argues that extreme poverty, where people cannot meet basic needs, can be ended within a generation. He believes rich countries have the resources and knowledge to make this happen.

  2. IDEA 2

    The poorest are trapped

Sachs describes a poverty trap: people are too poor to save or invest, so they cannot escape poverty. Diseases, poor soils and lack of infrastructure keep them stuck. Help is needed to break the cycle.

  3. IDEA 3

Development is like climbing a ladder

Sachs describes a ladder of development. Most countries have climbed some rungs, but the poorest cannot reach the first rung without outside help. Aid can lift them onto it. Climbing then becomes possible.
