Invent and Wander

  1. IDEA 1

Always act like it's Day 1

Bezos describes Day 1 as the mindset of a young company that stays curious, fast and focused on customers. Day 2, he warns, is a slide into stagnation and decline.

  2. IDEA 2

    Obsess over customers, not competitors

Bezos argues that focusing on customers rather than rivals keeps a company inventing. Customers are always dissatisfied in useful ways, which creates endless opportunities to improve. Rivals are a distraction.

  3. IDEA 3

    Think in the long term

In his first shareholder letter, Bezos explained that Amazon would make decisions for long-term value rather than short-term profits. He returned to this principle repeatedly over the years. Patience was part of the plan.
