Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence
- IDEA 1
Jinnah began as a nationalist
Jaswant Singh describes Jinnah's early career as a lawyer and Congress leader who worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He was once praised as an ambassador of that unity, a side of him often forgotten.
- IDEA 2
The Lucknow Pact brought cooperation
Singh highlights the Lucknow Pact of 1916, when Congress and the Muslim League agreed on joint demands. He sees it as a moment when cooperation between communities seemed possible. That hope later faded.
- IDEA 3
Gandhian politics alienated him
Singh argues that Jinnah disliked Gandhi's mass politics, which mixed religion and politics. Jinnah preferred constitutional methods, and he gradually drifted away from Congress. Mass agitation, he felt, would unleash forces no one could control.
