6 key ideas, each explained in our own words.

Atomic Habits

  1. IDEA 1

    Systems beat goals

Winners and losers usually want the same thing. What separates them is the process they repeat every day. Set the goal for direction, then put your energy into the system that produces the result.

  2. IDEA 2

    Tiny gains compound

Getting 1% better each day looks like nothing in a week. Over a year it multiplies to roughly 37 times better, while 1% worse each day decays toward zero. Judge a habit by its trajectory, not today's result.

  3. IDEA 3

    Become the type of person

Start with identity instead of outcome. Each action is a vote for who you are becoming. "I'm someone who trains" outlasts "I want to lose 5 kg" because it doesn't end when the target is hit.
