8 key ideas, each explained in our own words.

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World

  1. IDEA 1

A boy survived a harsh childhood

Weatherford describes how Temujin, later called Genghis Khan, was abandoned with his family after his father was poisoned. He survived hunger, capture and enemies on the Mongolian steppe, which made him tough and resourceful.

  2. IDEA 2

    He united the tribes

Temujin united the feuding tribes of the Mongolian steppe, ending constant raids. In 1206 he was proclaimed Genghis Khan, ruler of all Mongols. Weatherford presents this unity as the base on which all later conquests were built.

  3. IDEA 3

    Merit mattered more than birth

Weatherford argues that Genghis Khan promoted people based on loyalty and ability rather than family background. This created an effective army and government. Weatherford sees this as one reason why the Mongols were able to rise so quickly.
