Isaiah Berlin: Two Concepts of Liberty

IDEA 1
Negative and positive liberty
Negative liberty is freedom from interference; positive liberty is the capacity to shape your life. Policy debates often turn on which matters more.
IDEA 2
Value pluralism
Important values like liberty, equality and security can genuinely conflict. Wisdom lies in balancing them, not pretending one always wins.
IDEA 3
Beware utopias
Grand plans to force everyone toward one ideal have justified terrible acts. Humility about final answers protects freedom.
