Hello World

1. IDEA 1

   Algorithms now make big decisions

Fry, a mathematician, explores how algorithms are used in areas such as justice, medicine, transport and crime. She argues that we must understand both their power and their flaws to use them well.

2. IDEA 2

   Data reveals a great deal

Fry explains how companies collect data about people and use it to predict their behaviour. She raises concerns about privacy and consent. Once data is gathered, it can reveal habits that the person never meant to share.

3. IDEA 3

   Courts use risk scores

Fry describes algorithms that help judges decide on bail and sentencing. They can be more consistent than humans, but they can also be biased. Fry says that the key is knowing the limits of such tools and how they are used.
