A trader built India's biggest company
McDonald, an Australian journalist, tells the story of Dhirubhai Ambani, who rose from a modest background in Gujarat to build Reliance into one of India's largest companies. The book describes both his remarkable achievements and the controversies around his methods.

Aden gave him experience
Ambani worked as a clerk in Aden, where he learned about trading. He returned to India with ambition. In McDonald's account, those years taught him how trade worked, and gave him the confidence to try something bigger at home.

Reliance began in trading
Ambani started Reliance in Bombay as a trading business, dealing in yarn and spices. It grew into manufacturing. In McDonald's account, the early trading business gave him money and contacts that he later used to build factories.
