The Emergency: Indian Democracy's Darkest Hour
- IDEA 1
The Emergency grew from democracy itself
Prakash argues that the Emergency was not a sudden break but grew out of tensions within Indian democracy. Conflicts between popular power, constitutional law and the state had been building for years.
- IDEA 2
It was legal on paper
Prakash notes that Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency using powers in the Constitution itself. He argues this shows how democratic institutions can be used to suspend democracy legally. The law itself provided the tools.
- IDEA 3
Popular protests challenged the government
Prakash describes the JP movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan, which mobilised students and others against corruption and misrule. The government saw these protests as a threat to order. Tension rose across north India.
