The Five Love Languages
- IDEA 1
People express love differently
Chapman, a marriage counsellor, argues that people give and receive love in different ways, which he calls love languages. Problems arise when partners speak different languages without realising it. Chapman presents this as a way to understand differences.
- IDEA 2
Words can express love
Chapman describes words of affirmation, such as praise and encouragement, as one love language. For some people, kind words matter most. In his view, a heartfelt compliment can mean more to such a person than a costly present.
- IDEA 3
Time together matters
Chapman describes quality time, giving someone full attention, as another love language. Being present shows care. In his account, a person who values this feels loved when a partner sets aside distractions and gives undivided time.
