Modern Romance
- IDEA 1
Technology changed dating
Ansari, a comedian, teamed with sociologist Eric Klinenberg to study how smartphones and the internet have transformed romance. They combine humour with interviews, focus groups and research. Their aim is to understand how love is changing, not just to joke about it.
- IDEA 2
Past generations married locally
The authors describe how earlier generations often married people from their own neighbourhoods, often young. Choices were limited but quick. In their account, the pool of possible partners was small, so people often settled close to home.
- IDEA 3
Expectations rose
The authors argue that people now seek soulmates who fulfil them deeply, rather than simply a suitable partner. This raises the bar. In their view, a higher standard for love can bring both deeper hopes and greater disappointment.
