The Filter Bubble
- IDEA 1
The internet shows us ourselves
Pariser argues that websites increasingly personalise what each user sees based on past behaviour. As a result, people end up in a filter bubble, surrounded mainly by information that matches their existing views.
- IDEA 2
Search results differ by person
Pariser describes how Google began personalising search results in 2009. Two people searching the same word could see very different results. This meant that the web a person saw was becoming more and more personal.
- IDEA 3
News feeds filter friends
Pariser describes how Facebook's news feed chooses which posts users see. He noticed that posts from people with different political views disappeared from his feed. Pariser saw this as a sign that unseen sorting can narrow our view.
